Veolia wins Florida waste-to-energy pact

Jan. 26 -- Veolia ES Waste-to-Energy Inc. has been awarded a long-term contract
to operate the Pinellas County, Fla., waste-to-energy facility in Clearwater,
Fla.
The county´s board of commissioners approved the 17-year, $25-million-per-year
contract Jan. 25. The deal is worth an estimated $615 million, which will include
refurbishing the facility, said Steve Passage, CEO of Veolia ES Waste-to-Energy,
a division of Lombard, Ill.-based Veolia Environmental Services North America
Corp.
The Pinellas County waste-to-energy plant, which the county owns, began operating
in 1983 and has the capacity to burn 3,150 tons of trash per day. The facility
generates enough electricity to power 45,000 homes. Wheelabrator Technologies
Inc., a division of Waste Management Inc., has operated the plant since its
opening. Veolia ES Waste-to-Energy will take over operations May 6.
