Sept. 10 -- Covanta Holding Corp. has agreed to buy two Massachusetts waste-to-energy facilities for $61 million.

The Fairfield, N.J.-based company is acquiring the operating businesses of EnergyAnswers Corp. The facilities are a 400-ton-per-day site in Springfield, Mass., and a 240-ton-per-day plant in Pittsfield, Mass.

Included in the transaction is an ash disposal landfill in Springfield, two transfer stations in Springfield and Canaan, N.Y., a waste transportation business and a wood and yard waste recycling facility in Cape Cod, Mass.

Covanta will pay $61 million in cash and assumption of debt for the assets. It expects to close the acquisition in the fourth quarter.
