Jan. 25 -- All major heavy-duty truck and engine manufacturers now meet new
federal emissions standards, according to the Diesel Technology Forum.
The trucks and engines also have been certified by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency for full production, the Washington, D.C.-based group said.
These new trucks use particulate matter filters to trap emissions and run
90 percent cleaner than the previous generation of trucks. Nitrogen oxide emissions
also have been cut "significantly, the group said.
"The nationwide availability of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in October 2006
provided 97 percent cleaner diesel fuel, enabling manufacturers to engineer
the cleanest diesel trucks ever," said Forum Executive Director Allen Schaeffer.
The Diesel Technology Forum calls itself a non-profit organization dedicated
to raising awareness about the economic importance and environmental progress
of diesel engines and equipment.
